Support to the Arandis SMEs has been provided through enterprise and entrepreneurial capacity building for existing and emerging entrepreneurs. This has been done by way of upgrading business skills; and it has contributed to business growth and employment creation. SMEs Compete was contracted by the ASDP to provide training in order to improve business services from 2007 – 2009. Support was provided in the following areas; business mentoring, business skills development, formation of business linkages, facilitation of market access, as well as demand driven services to the SMEs. More than 68 SMEs benefitted from the interventions by SMEs Compete. These include manufacturers, retailers, restaurateurs, cleaning services, and steel and construction industries. 151 individuals benefited from training, 104 females and 47 males.
SMEs Compete also facilitated the first ever Expo in Arandis in 2008. The Expo provided an excellent opportunity for local small firms to showcase their products and services, and enabled businesses to establish business linkages. Following the success of the first Expo, a second Expo was held in 2009 and another in 2010; both with great success.
In 2010, the Rössing Foundation has been mentoring and coaching SMEs on business registration, business plan development, as well as advising on any other business related matters.
To address the need for business infrastructure and premises for SMEs in Arandis, the ATC secured funding from the ERC Development Fund for the phased construction of a Trade Centre. Phase 1 was completed in 2010 and 4 units are operational. Phase 2 will be constructed toward the end of 2010.
An open market is currently under planning and construction is expected to commence by January 2011.
